Earl Tawny Rhoads is the artist and founder behind The Tawny Canvas, a creative studio based in Columbia, Missouri.
The Tawny Canvas specializes in live event hand engraving for luxury brands, custom calligraphy, event signage, and day-of wedding stationery. We also teach calligraphy and watercolor workshops, creating space for you to discover the joy of intentional artistry.
From retailers and brand activations to weddings, special events, meaningful gifting, and curated home pieces, each design is thoughtfully created to be personal, refined, and unforgettable.

Due to the versatility of hand engraving, we can add personal messages/names and even illustrations to a wide variety of items that many laser engravers cannot.

These include spot calligraphy, envelope addressing, place/ escort cards, seating charts, and wedding signages.

Hi! It’s lovely to meet you.
I’m the proud owner and artist behind The Tawny Canvas.
By day, I work as a medical laboratory scientist. By night (and most weekends), I lean fully into my creative side. When I’m not lettering or painting, you’ll find me diving into personal finance spreadsheets (yes, I proudly love a good budget), watching true crime, being outdoors, dreaming up DIY home projects, or spending time with friends and my sweet little family.
My calligraphy journey began in 2014 at a small boba tea shop, armed with a dotted notebook and a black permanent marker. What started as a simple hobby quickly grew into something so much more — a business that has brought deep joy, purpose, and the opportunity to live out my dreams.
To me, calligraphy is more than beautiful handwriting. It’s presence. It’s intention. It’s slowing down enough to breathe, create, and be fully in the moment.
My heart is to work with you, to bring your brightest ideas to life and elevate your experience, whether through a live event, a hands-on workshop, a thoughtful gift, or your long-awaited wedding day.
